Cold days, grey skies, constant rain – wintertime can be gloomy and miserable…but it doesn’t have to be!
Many people LOVE winter for the chance to slow down a bit, stay indoors where it’s warm and cosy, and enjoy being safe and snug indoors while the weather rages outside.
If you’re not a fan of winter, here’s a few reasons why you should be! Winter is the perfect time to:
Eat! It’s natural in winter that we all crave comfort food, and it’s the perfect time of year to indulge on hearty winter meals.
Rug up. Woolly socks, warm jumpers, flannelette sheets and pyjamas, and soft blankets are a must for winter.
Spend time with your favourite people. Winter is a great time for relaxing and slowing life down and is ideal for catch ups with friends and family.
Switch off technology. There’s nothing better than sitting by the fire and reading a book or playing board games, and just enjoying your downtime.
Enjoy a warm drink. A good cup of tea, herbal tea or a hot chocolate soothes the soul on a cold winter day!
Take time out to relax. Winter getaways are just as good as summer getaways and sometimes even better because a lot of places are quieter and offer more time to relax!

Bush walking and hiking are favourite pastimes for many. Hiking groups are popping up all over the place and for good reason – Perth has amazingly beautiful national parks to explore, with highly accessible trails, sensational viewpoints, and an abundance of wildlife to meet along the way.
If you are yet to discover bush walking in the Perth Hills, here’s three options of trails to check out, depending on how long you want to go.
Mundaring Weir loop
This trail begins at the Perth Hills Discovery Centre and can be walked clockwise or anti-clockwise for the 10.6km loop. Allow yourself up to three hours to complete this trail and enjoy a diversity of scenery, amazing views, and plenty of wildflowers after the winter rains.
Lake Leschenaultia loop
This one requires a bit of a drive to get there, but is totally worth it. The lake this time of year is picturesque and tranquil, and the trails are easy to follow, The loop is a short 5.5km without too many climbs, making it perfect for those who just want to stretch their legs and enjoy the bush, as well as for those with younger children in tow. The loop should take just around 1.5hrs to complete.
Mount Dale circuit
Within the Helena National Park, this walk follows the contours of Mount Dale to its peak where walkers can enjoy the panoramic views of the Darling Ranges. The loop is around 2.5km and should take up to an hour, or longer if you stop to enjoy the views. There’s plenty of wildlife in the National Park and often you’ll see kangaroos, eagles, and reptiles along the way.
Make a day of it!
After all that exercise and fresh air, you’re sure to have worked up an appetite, and that’s where The Lounge at Amaroo can help!
The Lounge at Amaroo is in Mount Helena, nestled within the bushland of the Helena National Park. For early morning hikers, the restaurant is open for breakfast from 8-10am so you can enjoy a big breakfast of fresh eggs, bacon, sausage, hash brown, spinach, mushrooms, grilled tomato, beans, and toast either before or after your hike. Of course, if you only want something small before heading out on the trails, we can help with that too!
For those who’d prefer a late morning bush walk followed by a scrumptious lunch, the Lounge at Amaroo offers its lunch menu from 12-3pm. Choose from a wide variety of dishes that suits all tastes, with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options available.
Plan your day out in the Perth Hills with a bush walk or hike, and a sensational meal at The Lounge at Amaroo. Book at table at amarooretreat.com.au/book-a-table/

April long weekends – we are open and ready to serve you! *
This April, West Australians are fortunate enough to get not one, but TWO long weekends in a row!
Easter was the perfect time for celebrating with family, as many West Australians hit the road for one last getaway before the winter months kick in.
But even though the Easter long weekend is done, we still have another three day weekend as we stop to commemorate ANZAC Day.
The Lounge at Amaroo has just a couple of suggestions on how to guarantee that you make the most of your ANZAC Day long weekend!!
Start the weekend in style!
Fridays always come around with that sense of excitement and relief that the working week is over, and the fun is about to start. And when it’s a long weekend, Fridays feel even better!
The Lounge at Amaroo has live music every Friday and Saturday from 6pm – 9pm, and when combined with Perth’s best menu and cocktail bar all in a secluded bush setting, this is the perfect spot to kick off your long weekend!
This week we have crowd favourites Kurt Carrera on Friday, and Little Song on Saturday.
Take a stroll before breakfast
The mild autumn weather is the best time of year for bushwalking, and at Amaroo Retreat, we have some easy walking trails right on our doorstep. Why not grab a couple of friends on the Saturday or Sunday morning and spend an hour or so walking in nature in the beautiful Perth Hills. Then when you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the Lounge at Amaroo for a freshly cooked breakfast from 8am-10am!
Date night
With no work on Monday, you could have your choice on whether you go out for a romantic dinner on Saturday or Sunday of the long weekend. And if you haven’t tried our newest menu at The Lounge at Amaroo, you need to treat yourself.
The Lounge at Amaroo is celebrated for its uniquely Australian menu that is made from locally sourced ingredients. Our entrees will delight with prawns, beef croquettes, cauliflower bites and scallops being a few of the choices.
For a hearty main course, you have the choice of pasta, fish, chicken, sirloin, or our special vegetarian Bento Bowl – vegan option also available. And round off the meal with a heavenly dessert – lemon curd, chocolate mousse or affogato.
Cocktails with friends
Celebrate the long weekend with a night at our cocktail bar! We are so proud of our offerings of exciting and delicious cocktails that are sure to delight all your senses. Put on your party clothes, bring some friends, and make a night of it having cocktails in our fabulous restaurant and bar.
Commemorate ANZAC Day the right way
Let’s not forget the reason behind the public holiday. On every 25th day of April, Australians take the day to remember and commemorate the legacy of the ANZACs, and to show our thanks to those who went to war to protect and serve our great country.
The Shire of Mundaring is hosting a gunfire breakfast, 9.15am march and 9,30am ANZAC service at Chidlow Green, corner Old Northam Road and Thomas Road in Chidlow on Monday 25th April. Here you can pay your respects to our fallen soldiers.
We’re open for breakfast from 8am-10am on ANZAC Day, then open again for dinner from 5pm – late, with the kitchen closing at 8pm.
*Please note:
There is a 20% surcharge on public holidays.
See our website for opening times and to view our delicious menu at The Lounge (the Amaroo Retreat a la carte restaurant).

The Lounge at Amaroo have designed a night of indulgence, extravagance, glamour, and ultimately, satisfaction. We invite you to our Vasse Felix Wine Dinner, which is a degustation event like no other!
This exciting event will be held on Thursday 19 May at The Lounge at Amaroo. We have selected the most amazing wines to accompany a delectable 6- course menu, and you get to enjoy it all in our stunning restaurant overlooking magnificent Australian bushland. What could be better?!
Introducing The Wines
Many will agree that the best part of a good meal is the wines that go with it.
The Lounge at Amaroo are delighted to partner with Vasse Felix to be able to present some of the best sparkling, red & white wines available in Western Australia.
The Idée Fixe Blanc De Blancs are elegant and expressive and have that distinct flavour that only comes from the Margaret River region. The cool, coastal influence runs through the wine like a refreshing sea breeze. These wines are ideal for creative food pairing and are an exquisite match with fresh Western Australian seafood.
Starting The Meal Right
The Lounge at Amaroo is renowned for our Oyster Bar, and it makes perfect sense to start this magnificent dining experience with a selection of oysters.
Oysters are a delicacy that is historically synonymous with luxury; and every mouthful is a delicate nature of flavours. We are so fortunate to have one of the best sustainable fishing industries in the world here in Western Australia, and our fresh oysters are world-class quality.
To begin our special Vasse Felix Wine Dinner, you will delight all your senses as you dine on our fresh oysters with lemon/lime caviar.
More than a meal – This Is A Dining Experience
If you have never experienced a degustation before, now is the perfect time.
‘Degustation’ is the French word for ‘tasting’, and generally is used for meals that involve a menu of rich and diverse flavours, many courses, and an opportunity to taste the different offerings.
Our special event includes a range of dishes throughout the evening which have been carefully selected to offer our guests options that are packed with flavour, imagination, and quality local ingredients.
After your glass of Idee Fixe Blanc de Blanc with fresh oysters, treat your tastebuds to the following 5 courses and wine pairings:
Sesame encrusted yellow fin tuna with Mango Salsa / Vasse Felix Premium Sauvignon Blanc
Chicken roulade wrapped in leek with smoked bacon mash, sweet corn cream & chicken jus / Vasse Felix Premium Chardonnay
Herb crusted lamb cutlets with whipped truffle mash and mint & rosemary jus / Vasse Felix Premium Cabernet Sauvignon

Local produce and an exquisite seasonal menu make The Lounge at Amaroo a unique dining experience
Nestled on over 50 acres of the Perth Hills bush and well tucked away from street view lays The Lounge at Amaroo, which is Amaroo Retreat & Spa’s high-end restaurant and bar.

Our menu
Dining at The Lounge at Amaroo is a treat for the senses. Our menu caters for differing tastes and dietary requirements, with gluten free and dairy free options, plus meals for vegetarian and vegan diners. Our menu is seasonal and relies upon locally grown produce. Best of all, everything we serve is amazingly delicious, and you will surely want to come back again and again to try the entire menu!
Our head chef
Our unique menu is inspired by our Head Chef Surendra Sooriyarathna. Originally from Sri Lanka, Surendra has an extensive cooking career that spans across the globe. He left Sri Lanka to start his international career in Melbourne, then moved on to Perth and travelled up the coast to Port Hedland. His desire to learn more about western and European cuisine saw him make the move to Germany, where he was employed by the Dorint Hotel Group in one of their Michelin Star restaurants.
The Lounge at Amaroo is thrilled to have Surendra in charge of our restaurant and are delighted with everything he creates. When dining with us, you will see his preferred cooking style of modern Australian with French finishes and a touch of Sri Lankan spice!
Our promise
It’s no secret that locally grown food tastes better, but there is also so many other benefits of using local produce in our menu.
Local produce is more nutritious; food loses moisture and nutrients during the transport process and risks becoming spoiled. Using locally grown food contributes to improving our carbon footprint by the fact there is less transportation required and therefore less emissions. And of course, it benefits the local economy, including supporting local farmers and other producers.
The Lounge at Amaroo are committed to providing the highest quality food and drinks on our menu so that our customers can be guaranteed they are always eating well when they visit our restaurant.
